At home (ev-de)
To school (okul-a)
In office (büro-da)
From factory (fabrika-dan)

The vase is on the table. (Vazo masanın üzerindedir.)
The pen is under the chair. (Kalem sandalyenin altındadır.)
The house is behind the post office (Ev, postanenin arkasındadır.)
I came in time.

That's the story he was telling me about. (Bana anlatmakta olduğu hikaye odur.)
What can I cut the mellon with? (Kavunu neyle kesebilirim?)

a) Edatların İnglizce'de üç türlü kullanımı vardır

1. İsimler ile

for money (para için)
in business (işte)
without love (aşksız)
with a man (adam ile)

2. Zamirler ile for them (onlar için)

without you (sensiz)
by him (onun ile)
from her (ondan)
about me (benim hakkımda)

3. Gerundlar ile

for learning (öğrenmek için)
about teaching (öğretme hakkında)
against talking (konuşmaya karşı)

I am sitting in my room and reading a book. (odamda oturuyorum ve kitap okuyorum.)

She is looking at her husband and whispering something. (kocasına bakıyor ve ona birşeyler fısıldıyor.)

They told us about their adventures.

The baby takes after its mother. (bebek annesine benziyor.)

Bu cümlede yer alan “take” fiili almak, “after” edatı ise sonra, sonrasında demektir. ancak, ikisi birlikte kullanıldığında hiç ilgisiz bir anlam ortaya çıkıyor ki bu da benzemektir (resemble).

He didn’t take to me at first glance. (ilk bakışta beni sevmedi.)

We set about preparing for fair. (fuar için hazırlanmaya başladık.)

The cargo ship made for the destination place. (Kargo gemisi varış yerine doğru yol aldı.)

Let’s look to this matter once more. (Meseleyi bir kez daha inceleyelim.)

d)Yön Bildiren Edatlar

1. “To” Başlıcası “to” edatıdır ve bir hedefe doğru yönelişi ima eder. Mesela,

Örnek:Arda came back to his country. (Arda ülkesine geri döndü.)

“To” edatı “on” ve “in” edatlarıyla birleşerek “onto” ve “into” edatlarını oluşturur. “Onto” bir yüzeye yönelişi gösterir. “into” ise bir iç sahaya doğru harekettir.

Örnek:Please come in to my room. (Lütfen odama girin.)

He placed his stuff onto the floor. (Eşyalarını döşeme yüzeyine koydu.)

“To” bazen başka prepozisyonların parçasıdır. Mesela “towards” gibi.

Örnek:

The ship is sailing towards Marmara. (Gemi Marmara’ya doğru seyrediyor.)

** Master yapan “to” konumuz dışındadır.

“To” edatı iletişimde kullanılan fiillerden sonra gelir. (listen, speak (tell fiilinde kullanılmaz), relate, appeal (rica ve yalvarma anlamında kullanılırsa)

Örnek:

The family listens to the news every night. (Aile her akşam haberleri dinler.)

Listen to what I say. (Lafımı dinle)

The teacher speaks to his students softly. (Öğretmen öğrencileriyle kibarca konuşur.)

The book relates to a historical event. (Kitap, tarihi bir olayla ilgili.)

She appealed to God. (Tanrı’ya yalvardı.)

“To” edatı hareket ifade eden fiillerle kullanılır. (move, go, transfer, walk/run/swim/ride/drive/ fly, travel )

Örnek:

They are moving to the new city. (Yeni bir şehre taşınıyorlar)

We go to the cinema every weekend. (Her haftasonu sinemaya gideriz.)

The plane is flying to Ankara. (Uçak, Ankara’ya uçuyor.)

Hakan transferred to Inter of Italy. (Hakan, Inter’e transfer oldu.)

The cavalry rode to the hostile castle. (Süvari birliği düşman kaleye saldırdı.)

“To” ve “Towards” Farkı

“To” spesifik bir hedefe doğrudur. “Towards” ise genel bir hedef gösterir. “To” , hedefe varıştır. “Towards” da ise hedefe varıp varılmadığı belli değildir.

Örnek:

The frightened boy ran to his mother. (Korkan çocuk annesine doğru koştu.)

The hungry lion started to walk towards the forest where it could hunt. (Aç aslan , avlanabileceği ormana doğru yürümeye başladı.)

2."onto"Hareket fiillerinde “onto” yerine genellikle “on” kullanılır.

**Bu edatın kullanımı giderek azalmaktadır. Hareket fiillerinde

3. "in”Hareket fiillerinde aynı durumlar için "in” ve “into" kullanılır. “into” edatı cümlelerin sonunda yer almaz ancak soru cümlelerinin sonunda olabilir.

Örnek:

She came in. (İçeri girdi )(she came into olmaz.)

Now what kind of trouble has she gotten herself into?
Bazı durumlarda sadece “in” veya “inside” kullanılabilir.

Sabit durumları gösteren fiillerde on (üstünde) veya in (içinde) klasik anlamlarıyla yer alır.

“at” = Belirli bir zamanı ifade etmek için kullanılır

“on” = Belirli gün ve zamanları ifade etmek için kullanılır

Prepozisyon kendisinden sonar gelen isimle uyumlu olmalıdır.

e) Basit Edatlar In (içinde) (sabit durumda ve dışında olmayan)

At (...de, ...da)
Into (içinde )(haraket olduğunda)
On (üzerinde) (statik olarak)

Beyond (ötesinde)
Behind (arkasında)
Beneath (yerin altında)
Beside ( ...den başka, ...nın yanında)
Over( üstünde (temas olmadan) ) “over” bir önek olarak kullanılrsa sonrasındaki kelimeye “aşırı, fazla” anlamını katar. Bu kullanımda artık edat değildir.

upstairs (yukarıda)

h)Gereksizce Kullanılan Edatlar - Unnecessary Prepositions
